The definition of safety crystal applies to all types of glass subjected to specific transformation processes that grant them safe breakage modes. In other words, even if the safety crystal were to break, people or objects located near the glass are not threatened by the danger of sharp shards that could cause significant damage. Specifically, laminated safety crystal is composed of at least two glass panes of variable thickness, which are kept joined by one or more sheets of plastic material (generally PVB – polyvinyl butyral). This procedure causes contractions of the external part of the pane while the internal part remains viscous, inducing a state of permanent tension in the crystal. Tempered glass features superior anti-intrusion resistance characteristics, granting the glass greater mechanical strength and making it more resistant to break-in attempts, thermal shocks, and bending. Like other glasses defined as safety-grade, tempered crystal also breaks into numerous fragments with generally rounded edges, so as not to cause danger to the safety of property or people.
