Characterized by extremely low thermal expansion coefficients, ceramic glass is the ideal solution for all applications requiring high resistance to extreme temperatures and thermal shock. This material can withstand temperatures up to 800°C and serves as an excellent filter for ultraviolet (UV) rays. These properties make ceramic glass perfect for protecting metal halide lamps and for any high-heat industrial or domestic application.

The Characteristics of Ceramic Glass

From a technical and chemical standpoint, ceramic glass (or glass-ceramic) consists of fine-grained polycrystalline materials. These are obtained through controlled thermal crystallization and nucleation processes starting from unstable glass bases (such as lithium silicate).

Featuring a characteristic transparent appearance with a slight amber tint, and available in various thicknesses and custom shapes, ceramic glass provides excellent protection for cooktops, fireplaces, and wood or pellet stoves. It is also highly suitable for specialized technical uses, such as inspection windows (sight glasses) inside high-temperature industrial furnaces.

The material was famously discovered by accident by chemist S.D. Stookey in the mid-20th century. To produce it, the glass first undergoes shaping and then heating to trigger devitrification. In this process, metals (nucleating agents) or micro-liquations act as catalysts, ensuring the crystalline phase is perfectly balanced with the amorphous phase.

Vetreria Re: Bespoke Ceramic Glass

The specialized processing of ceramic glass ensures it remains stable and functional up to approximately 700-800°C. Furthermore, the manufacturing of this crystalline material increases its toughness—its ability to absorb energy and resist impact.

The optical, electrical, and mechanical properties of ceramic glass vary depending on the composition and the ratio between the glassy and crystalline phases. At Vetreria Re, we tailor these characteristics to suit the specific application, whether for:

  • High-performance cooktops

  • Stoves and fireplaces

  • Oven door panels

  • Electronic and medical components

Non-porous, mechanically strong, and offering excellent transparency, our ceramic glass serves both technical and decorative purposes. Since 1989, Vetreria Re has provided international clients with custom-made structural elements in ceramic glass, ensuring a smooth, elegant finish that guarantees safety and durability even in the most demanding thermal environments.
