To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Arco lamp, a masterpiece by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Flos chose to reveal the invisible. Vetreria Re contributed to this exclusive re-edition by handling the realization of the lead-free crystal base, a key element replacing the traditional Carrara marble block.
Transparency renews the icon: engineering and processing of the crystal block for the 60th anniversary.
Processing of the Crystal Base
The processing of this component required absolute precision. It is not just about aesthetics, but pure static functionality: the crystal block must act as a counterweight to support the large reach of the satin-finished steel telescopic arch. Our intervention focused on machining the massive block, ensuring impeccable transparency and creating the technical housings necessary for the pivot, which becomes visible through the material for the first time.
La sfida tecnica: Precisione assoluta e trasparenza impeccabile
As with the Galileo project, for Arco K too, the difficulty lay in combining significant volumes with a perfect surface finish. The result is a monolith that enhances the mechanics of the lamp, transforming structural weight into visual lightness. A concrete example of how our experience in special processing supports high-level design.
