Therefore, to make a transparent glass completely or partially opaque (frosted), it is possible to use a diluted solution of hydrofluoric acid or the sandblasting process. Let’s look at what these two glass frosting techniques consist of.

<details class="re-acc">

Frosted Glass: What You Need to Know

Transparent glass can be made translucent and opaque through a special treatment with hydrofluoric acid, hence the name “acid-etched glass” many use to refer to frosted glass. Hydrochloric acid is indeed capable of corroding one or both sides (single-sided or double-sided frosted glass) of the glass, generating the formation of protective crystals that give them their typical opaque and translucent appearance. Furthermore, the frosting process allows for a wide variety of decorations and designs (patterned frosted glass) across all or part of the glass surface.

The glass pane can be immersed in the acidic solution, or the latter, in a gelatinous form, can be applied to the glass surface. This second process is more suitable when wanting to create frosted parts in contrast with polished parts, while the immersion process can allow for double-sided frosted glass surfaces. The acid gradually corrupts the immersed part of the glass, producing more or less marked effects depending on the concentration (1% – 2%) and the contact time (from a minimum of 1 second to a maximum of 5 minutes), ensuring a refined finish.

</details>
<details class="re-acc">

The Sandblasting Technique

The sandblasting technique instead allows for the creation of special decorative effects on glass, ranging from simple opacification of the glass surface to the creation of artistic engravings on one or both sides of the glass. To obtain frosted glass, it is sufficient to direct the appropriately calibrated sand jet onto the entire glass pane or part of it, depending on whether one wishes to create special contrasts between polished and opaque or prefers to frost the entire surface. Sandblasting can be used alone or together with other techniques for the creation of artistic glazings, including enameling, painting, gold leaf and lead binding decorations, lamination with fabric and wire mesh, and can be performed on transparent or colored glass to enhance household comfort.

Like tiny projectiles, the silica sand grains directed against the glass surface by compressed air jets carve the glass surface with each pass, removing material and making it frosted. The sandblasting technique is very useful for frosting particularly large surfaces or for creating specific designs and decorations, both on flat crystals and on irregularly shaped objects: creating protective masks for hydrochloric acid frosting would indeed be difficult in this case.

</details>
<details class="re-acc">

Micro-Milling Engraving

Finally, there is a third technique that allows for single-sided, double-sided, or patterned frosted glass, but it is a particularly complex technique used only for creating especially thin and elaborate decorations, while it is less efficient for frosting entire glazings. This is engraving with carborundum micro-cutters or tungsten wheels, and it is a technique that requires great experience, precision, a steady hand, patience, and tool control. As mentioned, this last technique allows for precision work, whereas for the creation of glass walls or frosted glass doors on one or both sides, the acid-etching or sandblasting technique is more advisable to maintain acoustic silence.

</details>

Frosted glass, with its characteristic opaque surface, can be obtained through two different techniques: the first, a chemical type, exploits the corrosive properties of hydrochloric acid, while the second, a…

[37

post-22169","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-vetri-per-arredo-ed-edilizia

Frosted Glass - Vetreria Re

<meta name="description" content="Decorative effects and artistic engravings with silica sand and compressed air.
