Tempered, or toughened, glass is created by a special heat treatment known as tempering, which allows the characteristics of mechanical resistance and resistance to thermal shock to be increased by up to four or five times. In order to obtain tempered glass, it is necessary to insert the panes into a special oven which is brought to the temperature of "glass transition", or tempering, corresponding to approximately 640°C, only then to quickly cool it with jets of cold air. This process is able to cause the hardening of the superficial layers of glass which contract while the internal part, still hot, is kept viscose.

When tempered glass breaks, the forces of tension and compression present within the pane cause the immediate formation of cracks in all directions: in this way, instead of breaking into a few sharp and dangerous pieces, like glass, tempered glass shatters into many small, blunt fragments.

The typical uses for tempered glass relate to the creation of architectural, structural and furniture elements, which include glass dividing walls and partitions, table and coffee table surfaces, cabinets, internal sliding or hinged doors, shower cabinets, railings, canopies, fixed and mobile screens, windows, window systems, shelves, car windows and much more.
