Strengthened or wired glass is a particular type of shiny glass, not perfectly transparent, which does, however, allow light to filter through. Characterised by the presence of a mesh of metal wire chromates, which can run only in the direction of the casting or form a true metal mesh, wired glass is a transparent soda-lime glass with smooth, flat and parallel surface characteristics, which offers significant fireproof resistance. It is produced through the casting and rolling of two panes in the paste state between which an electro-welded steel square mesh is placed which allows for the pane to remain cohesive even in the case of breakage.

Thanks to its network structure, wired glass disbands slowly, without generating stresses which would cause its breakage by explosion. In order to guarantee complete fireproof resistance, it is, however, important for wired glass to be mounted in a special frame able to block its edges. In addition, in the case of accidental breakage of the pane, the metallic framework is able to retain the shards of glass thus guaranteeing an average level of protection from breaking and entering and acts of vandalism.
