Essential for effective protection against fire within residential or business buildings, firewall or fireproof glass allow you effectively to combine aesthetic requirements with safety. Even in environments particularly subject to the risk of fire, in fact, it would be difficult to avoid completely using glass to create windows and doors that allow light to enter and make even darker environments less oppressive.

In order to combine aesthetic requirements with effective fire protection, Vetreria Re offers firewall glass ideal for the construction of window frames, doors, windows, partitions and dividing walls able to resist flames. The construction of safety glass doors resistant to fire is regulated by certain approval codes which draw up a classification based upon the capacity to resist fire, identified by the Decree of the Ministry of the Interior no. 339 dated 30 November 1983 and updated on the basis of Ministerial Decree dated 16 February 2007.

In particular, there are some codes that identify two main safety classes, i.e. RE fireproof glass and REI firewall glass. Those codes are followed by a number which indicates the number of minutes (15, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180) for which the identified resistance is guaranteed. Let’s look specifically at what is identified by the safety codes fireproof or firewall glass, which indicate the stability, resistance and thermal insulation capacity of glass exposed to fire:

  • Code "R" indicates the capacity of a glass or windowless doorframe to maintain stability for the specified period of time;
  • Code "RE" indicates the capacity of a glass or windowless doorframe to maintain stability and resistance for a given period of time;
  • Code "REI" indicates the capacity of a glass or windowless doorframe to maintain stability, resistance and thermal insulation for the given period of time;
  • Code "E" indicates the capacity of a glass or windowless doorframe to maintain integrity, for a given period of time;
  • Code "EW" indicates the capacity of a glass or windowless doorframe to maintain integrity for a certain period of time, guaranteeing, at the same time, control of irradiation;
  • Code "EI" indicates the capacity of a glass or windowless doorframe to maintain, for the specified period of time, stability, resistance and thermal insulation.
